Where do I buy dried elderberries to make homemade elderberry syrup.
Today it is much easier to purchase dried elderberries, if none grow wildly around you that you can forage. I have even seen them stocked at Walmart. I would encourage you to source the best quality and organic if possible. You are infusing the nutrients from these berries straight into your health tonic so you want to aim for clean, organic, pesticide-free berries. How long does homemade elderberry syrup stay good?
Homemade elderberry syrup typically stays good in the fridge for about 2 to 3 months if stored properly. Make sure your glass jars are properly sanitized, add honey to your recipe to help preserve it longer, and store in the coldest part of your fridge.

Ingredients
- Equipment:
Large Stock Pot (that will fit 7 cups of water)
Glass jars with lid for storing. (I use these)
Stainless Steel or Cloth Strainer.
- Ingredients:
7 cups of water
1 cup of dried elderberries
Raw Honey (sweeten to taste)
2-3 Ceylon Cinnamon Sticks
1/4 cup sliced ginger
6-10 whole cloves (Cloves have a strong, spicy flavor, so start on the lower end if you’re unsure, and you can always adjust next time)
1 tablespoon dried hibiscus (optional)
1 tablespoon dried rose hips (optional)
2 tablespoons dried echinacea (optional)
Directions
- Add water and all the ingredients (Except the honey) to a stock pot and bring it to a rolling boil for 3 minutes.
- Once the water has been at boiling point for 3 minutes, turn the burner down to simmer, and allow the syrup to simmer for 40 minutes.
- After 40 minutes turn off the burner, remove the pot and allow the syrup to cool down.
- After 20 minutes of cooling place a strainer over a glass jar and ladle out the syrup into jars. Press down on the mixture in strainer with the back of the ladle to get out as many juices as possible. (see video below)
- Add honey to each jar to sweeten. Honey provides both extra medicinal benefits ans helps preserve your syrup longer.
